Dr. McClendon graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (1981) and completed a two-year Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry at Ft. Knox (1988–1990). He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1981 to 1994.
He earned the Federal Services Board Certification in General Dentistry and the American Board of General Dentistry in 1994.
Since 1994, he has been in private practice in Manhattan, providing restorative and bioesthetic care. He has been a speaker both nationally and internationally.
He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Bioesthetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and Roth-Williams International Society of Orthodontists. He has been an instructor for the Foundation for Orognathic Bioesthetics International (OBI) for 25 years and served as Director of OBI Mexico for 7 years.
For 10 years, he served as Assistant Program Director for the New York University Esthetic Continuum (2014–2024), and for 7 years, he provided a 10-session Occlusion Workshop for the NYU Postgraduate Periodontology Residents (2017–2023). Additionally, he has been involved in the Full FACE orthodontic program (Ormco, Forestadent) and created and directed CORE (Collaborative Orthodontic and Restorative Efforts) workshops.
For the past 15 years, he has been a special speaker at the Arnett-Gunson Orthognathic Surgery Course. He designed a modified plate for the AD2 articulator and developed an iPad app for dental photos and patient records.
Dr. McClendon provided the chapter “Equipe Multidisciplinar em Ortodontia Bioestética” in Nova Visao em Ortodontia e Ortopedia Funcional dos Maxilares by Flavio Cotrim-Ferreira and Eduardo Sakai (Livraria Santos Editora Ltda., 2008, pp. 345–453). He wrote “Bioesthetic Orthodontics” in Goal-Directed Orthodontics, edited by Andy Giriardot (2013). He also wrote “Integration of Function and Esthetics” in Essentials of Esthetic Dentistry: Smile Design Integrating Esthetics and Function, edited by Jonathan B. Levine (Elsevier, 2016). Most recently, he added “Bioesthetics and Orthodontics” for Diagnostico Biofunctional, edited by Claudia Casanova Arambula (Amolca, 2021).
